After 2 weeks our first butterfly has emerged from its chrysalis. It is so beautiful! Mrs FitzGerald released it in our garden on her birthday, we were all watching. The butterfly flew around us a little then went off into the distance.
The caterpillars have been growing, eating and pooing so much this week. We have been learning more about their life cycle. They start off as eggs, then hatch into caterpillars, then form a chrysalis from which finally emerges a butterfly which lays the eggs for the cycle to start over again.
The caterpillars are getting bigger and changing shape a little bit. They just keep getting bigger and bigger, 3cm in length now. We can see that they are a bit more brown than black now.
The caterpillars have been growing so quickly almost one and a half centimetres since last week! They are eating lots and lots of leaves. Ms Box's poor lemon tree will soon have none left.
The caterpillars are so tiny, they measure less than 1cm. We read in a book that they are white, black and brown so that they are camouflaged looking like bird poo, that way nothing will want to eat them.
